Boiler problem – loud banging noise?

I’m currently living in a two bedroomed flat and we have an old boiler (the ones that are huge and in the cupboard) and I have a switch for it to turn on the water and my gas central heating. What is now happening is every time I turn it on it’ll be ok but every so often (maybe once an hour?) there will be a loud banging noise and if I have my gas fire on in the living room you can see the air from the chimney coming down where the flames are. The gush of air is pretty mighty as I have a pop up tent about 1 and 1/2 feet to the right of the fire and the air makes it move!

I have called my local authority who are sending out someone tomorrow but they have advised me not to turn my boiler on.. is anyone aware of what the problem could be?
