how to keep a hyacinth living?

every year i see hyacinth flowers in stores i shop at. i love the scent and would love to have one for a long period of time. i bought one last year and it died after a month or so. the same thing happened the year before. the one last year was inside. the one the year before was planted outside. how do i keep one from dying? picture if needed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Blue_Hyacinth_by_Kranchan.jpg
