Wood floor fitting between rooms – threshold or no threshold?

I would like to install wooden floors throughout my ground floor. However, I want a ‘through’ look without any interuptions at doorways, I want the wood to be able to flow through the rooms.
I have been told by a couple of floor fitters that because its wood which moves about depending on the weather etc, you cannot have huge areas of wooden floor fitted without putting thresholds/expansion gaps in door ways in case the floor shrinks or expands.

I have been buying several decorating magazines and their spreads of lovely flooring never show any horrible beading or threshold strips at doorways and even up against the walls (although I suspect that it is hidden by the skirting in some cases)

Do you have wooden floors? What have you done at thresholds and doorways? Do you have beading or expansion strips?

Thanks
